Instead of feeling like leftover scraps from the recent Strokes album, Julian Casablancas’ solo effort Phrazes For The Young is actually quite impressive. With an eclectic mix of both electric and country touches, Julian manages to keep the listener intrigued. This is especially true of Tourist, a song that stays strong from start to finish and manages to be extremely catchy but still interesting. Lately I’ve had trouble finding songs that really excite me (too many remixes!), but this one is really worth checking out.

If you’re looking for a lovely tune to play to your girlfriend/boyfriend to tell them how you really feel, do NOT play them this. From what I can tell, this song tells the story of a man who’s cheating on his girlfriend while fearing that she’s doing the same to him. Not exactly the stuff of romance. But it’s a pretty good song! Just don’t include it on your autumn mix CD for them. Or, you know, cut it out with the season themed mix CDs, that works too.
