Molly’s Song of the Day

I’ve been listening to Mumford & Sons a lot lately. Their debut album is full of Americana rock, which is a bit strange considering they hail from the UK. Still, it’s extremely enjoyable to hear each song (seriously, every song on the album) build to a stomping crescendo of folk-y goodness. I have a weird habit of  listening to music and thinking about whether it would fit in a movie trailer, and the end of Sigh No More (the title track off the record) belongs in one that’s filled with earnestly happy moments between the protagonist and a love interest/friend/family member.  You know, the part at the end after all the dramatic sad stuff. Enjoy!

MGMT had a pretty big hit with their debut album Oracular Spectacular, so it’s no surprise people are eagerly awaiting the release of their sophomore album Congratulations. If the first single Flash Delirium is anything to go by, MGMT are determined to evolve from their first effort. You can still hear the Bowie influence, maybe even more so on this single than any of their previous ones, but it’s less falsetto driven and ends harder than anything on the first record. Might take a couple of listens, but I am pretty sure I am into it.

I’ve previously spoken about my love for Robyn’s well crafted pop songs, and Be Mine is one of my favorites from her. Ellie Goulding is an up and coming artist in a similar vein as Robyn, and she’s featured on Erik Hassle’s cover of this wonderful song. It’s a really gorgeous version that’s definitely worth checking out.

Today’s song of the day is a lovely cover of one of 2006’s best songs, And I Was A Boy From School by Hot Chip. Grizzly Bear completely nails this song, stripping it down from it’s electropop roots and using their strong grasp of harmony to turn it into a gorgeous acoustic number. Seriously worth a download, whether you’re a fan of the original or not.

About to break into dance, obviously.

About to break into dance, obviously.

What is it about weird falsetto-y electro pop music? It’s catchiness is undisputed. I think I learned in my economics class that during times of financial crisis people just wanna dance. Oh wait, that’s a lie, I never took economics. Anyways, lets pretend I am not a big liar and awkwardly shimmy away our financial worries to Backseat by STAYGOLD (they capitalize the name themselves, I’m not yelling at you).

So they say that April is the cruelest month, but I am pretty sure January could give it a run for its money. The weather is bleak, New Year’s resolutions are crumbling, and school is back in full swing. In a month this harsh, there seems to be two musical options: either listen to a ton of happy music in order to distract you from the grey, bleary reality of January, or embrace the sad and listen to the most heartbreaking, lonely music available. If you’re going for the latter, I’ve got a pretty good song to help stomp out any remaining Christmas cheer. Here’s Song For A Lover Of Long Ago by Justin Vernon of Bon Iver fame. Don’t worry, it’s also absolutely gorgeous, so you can hum the melody as you gaze out your window in a melancholy fashion.
